We propose a number of tips that will mean you travel in a more ecological, streamlined manner. Follow our guide…
#1 Your best ally – an appropriate water bottle!
Travelling smart means travelling light. Moderation and minimalism are really helpful to clock up the kilometres without exhausting yourself. Why go for a single-use bottle when you can opt for a water bottle or flask that can be reused day after day? Practical to use, this accessory can be found in a whole variety of sizes and colours, but avoid plastic and opt for one made of stainless steel, glass or bamboo. We recommend you choose a light one that can be attached to your down tube (or diagonal bicycle bar), allowing you to refresh yourself easily without having to twist and turn.

#2 Be well equipped, but go for second hand!
Panniers and glasses, a repair kit and first-aid kit, plus basic cooking equipment… the list of essential items quickly mounts up. To avoid spending money, why not borrow accessories, or buy them second hand, perhaps via a website, in France such as Leboncoin or Troc-Vélo. This tip will not only help your finances but the environment too.
Comfort and safety go hand in hand. Make sure you have the right clothes for all kinds of weather, and the right helmet. Don’t cut corners on safety. With a helmet, it is much better to buy a new one, with CE certification, rather than a helmet that’s been bashed about or doesn’t quite fit – it should be the right size, protecting both your head and temples. It’s good to be ecologically minded, but you need to be sensible too.
Bicycle repair shops can be found in many French towns. Do stop at one before starting off on your trip, to check that your trusted travelling companion is in top condition. You may find useful tools or small parts as well as tips to keep your bike in the best condition possible. Do ask for advice. Professionals, plus well-clued-up amateurs, will be very pleased to share their knowledge.
#3 Limit the number of single-use containers and objects you use
As with water bottles, we recommend you opt for objects and containers that can be reused.
- Resolution no.1: don’t use plastic shopping bags, but opt for a light rucksack or bag.
- Resolution no.2: carry a reusable tote bag, practical for picking up supplies at markets along La Flow Vélo, for instance.
- Resolution no.3: take a reusable picnic set (cups, cutlery, bento box, beeswax wrapping…) to eat ecologically.
#4 Go for solid soaps and shampoos
- 100% natural soaps, such as Marseille or Aleppo soaps, as well as solid shampoo, are a really good idea. And with Savon de Marseille, it can even be used for washing up, a distinct advantage.
- Solid toothpaste and a bamboo toothbrush are also a good idea.
- As to organic natural deodorant, you could make your own, for example with coconut oil and bicarbonate of soda.
